How to Bind an Enemy: A Step-by-Step Ritual Guide

Binding magic is one of the most misunderstood practices in the occult. It is not the same as a hex. It does not destroy. It does not curse. What it does is stop — it freezes a person's ability to harm you, to interfere in your life, to act against your interests.

Think of it as a spiritual restraining order.

This guide covers the traditional method for a basic binding ritual. It is appropriate for situations where someone is actively causing harm and you need them stopped, not punished.

A binding spell constrains. It limits the target's freedom of action in specific ways — usually their ability to harm you, speak against you, or interfere with your work and relationships.

It does not:

• Cause physical harm
• Destroy their life or livelihood
• Affect people other than the target
• Work permanently without renewal

It does:

• Slow or stop their harmful actions
• Create confusion and obstacles when they try to act against you
• Protect your space and relationships from their influence
• Buy you time to heal, rebuild, or take other action

Use a binding when:

• Someone is actively spreading lies or gossip about you
• A person keeps inserting themselves into your life uninvited
• You need protection without escalation
• The situation calls for restraint rather than retaliation

Use a hex or crossing work when:

• The harm done was severe and deliberate
• Binding has failed or is insufficient
• You want consequences, not just containment

• A black candle (taper or pillar)
• A photograph or written name of the target
• Black thread or cord (natural fiber — cotton or hemp)
• Black pepper
• Graveyard dirt (optional but powerful)
• A fireproof dish
• Banishing oil (or olive oil with black pepper)

Binding work is most effective during:

• The waning moon (the two weeks between full and new moon)
• Saturday (Saturn's day — the planet of restriction and limitation)
• The hour of Saturn (first hour after sunset on Saturday)

If you cannot wait for ideal timing, a waning moon is the minimum requirement. Do not perform binding work during a waxing or full moon.

Clear your space. Light incense — frankincense or myrrh. Ground yourself. This is not a ritual to perform in a state of panic or acute rage. You need to be calm, focused, and clear about your intent.

Write your intent on a piece of paper: I bind [name] from harming me. I bind their tongue, their hands, their actions. They cannot reach me. They cannot harm me. They are stopped.

Be specific. If there is a particular action you need stopped, name it.

1. Dress your black candle with banishing oil, working from the center outward (away from you). As you dress it, focus on the target and their harmful actions.

2. Sprinkle black pepper around the base of the candle. If you have graveyard dirt, add a pinch.

3. Place the photograph or name paper face-down beneath the candle.

4. Light the candle.

5. Take your black cord and begin wrapping it around the photograph or name paper, saying aloud:

   I bind you [name]. I bind your words. I bind your hands. I bind your feet. I bind your will to harm me. You are stopped. You are contained. You cannot reach me.

6. Tie the cord in three knots, repeating the binding words at each knot.

7. Hold the bound paper over the candle flame (carefully) and let it catch. Drop it into the fireproof dish and let it burn completely.

8. Let the candle burn down fully if possible. If you must extinguish it, snuff it — never blow it out.

Bury the remains (cord, candle wax, ash) away from your home. Crossroads are traditional. Do not bring the remnants back inside.

Cleanse yourself after any enemy work. A salt bath, a smoke cleanse with sage or cedar, or a simple visualization of white light washing through your body.

Monitor the situation over the following days and weeks. Bindings typically take effect within one lunar cycle. If you see no change, the working may need to be repeated or strengthened.

Binding magic is generally considered defensive rather than aggressive. Most traditions hold that binding someone who is actively harming you is justified — you are not attacking, you are protecting.

That said, you are still directing spiritual force at another person without their consent. Take that seriously. Be certain of your target. Be certain of the harm. And be prepared to release the binding if circumstances change.
